How Matt Damon Made a System in The Martian

The soil of Mars in “The Martian” is more dirt than soil with no nutrients to help sustain plant life. Matt uses dried human feces and mixes it with water to use as a fertilizer. He plants potatoes in the fertilized dirt inside his space shelter, which helps keep the atmosphere stable. All this is possible because Matt plays a botanist in the movie.
